MANDI: Abhishek Awasthi, who has his roots in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, has created history by becoming the first Indian to be elected to the City of Greater Bendigo in the Australian state of Victoria.
In the elections conducted recent by the Victorian Electoral Commission, Awasthi was elected as councillor for the Kennington area, securing an impressive 59 per cent of the primary vote and defeating his nearest competitor Gavin Hicks.
The landmark achievement highlights the strides being made by the Indian diaspora in Australian public life.

Having resided in Kennington for over 14 years with his wife and daughter, Abhishek is known locally as a passionate advocate, volunteer and community leader.

Greater Bendigo, located about 150 km northwest of Melbourne in Victoria’s Loddon Mallee region, covers an area of 3,000 square km and comprises nine distinct wards, including Kennington.
Originally called “Big Gold Mountain” by Chinese immigrants during the gold rush era, Bendigo has a long history of multiculturalism and is now recognised as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy.
The city’s vibrant mix of cultures and languages has shaped it into a unique community, which Abhishek now proudly represents.
Legacy of community leadership, dedication
Abhishek’s commitment to community welfare spans numerous organizations and causes.
He has actively contributed to AFL Victoria, Cricket Australia, the Victorian Multicultural Commission, the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Rotary, Bendigo Sustainability Group, and other local groups.
Presently, he serves as President of the Indian Association of Bendigo, in addition to previously holding leadership roles with Loddon Campaspe Multicultural Services and LEAD Loddon Murray.
Expressing his gratitude in a recent interview, Abhishek thanked his supporters in both Australia and India, acknowledging the invaluable encouragement from his parents, family, friends, and the people of Mandi.
He stated, “Coming from a small town like Mandi and winning elections in a foreign land is a significant achievement. The support and encouragement from my community inspire me daily to make a positive impact.”
