12 families rendered homeless as their shanties gutted in massive Shimla fire, one severely burnt man shifted to PGI

SHIMLA: Twelve shanties were reduced to ashes in a fire that broke out at Engine Ghar in Shimla’s Sanjauli on the intervening night of December 7/8 (2023).
According to information, 12 shanties were completely gutted while some suffered partial damage. A man suffered severe burns in the incident and was rushed to nearby Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital from where he was referred to PGI-Chandigarh for specialised care in view of his critical condition.
The massive fire broke out around midnight when everyone was sleeping in their homes. A gas cylinder blast is being stated to be the reason behind the fire.
Fire brigade vehicles reached the spot soon after receiving information and the flames were controlled after two hours of hard work. However, the fire flared up again after some time. It was then completely controlled around 4.15 am.
The poor people living in the shanties could not even take out their belongings and had to run for their lives. Some of the homeless people were taken to their houses by the locals while others were accommodated in a nearby gurdwara.
