11-year-old Aakasa first from Himachal to qualify for national inline speed skating championship

In a momentous achievement, 11-year-old Aakasa Sharma has scripted history by becoming the first girl from Himachal Pradesh to qualify for the Roller Skating Federation of India’s national championship in inline speed skating.
Competing in the 11 to 14-year age category, Aakasa clinched the Group Championship Trophy at the 1st Himachal Pradesh State Roller Skating Championship held at Baddi International School.
Aakasa’s performance was nothing short of exceptional as she not only won the championship but also beat the qualifying time by a significant margin. Her victory has earned her a spot at the prestigious national championship, which is scheduled to take place in Mysuru in December 2024.
Honoured by the Himachal Pradesh Roller Skating Association, Aakasa was awarded the championship trophy by treasurer Mithun Rana. With her historic achievement, Aakasa has become an inspiration for many young skaters of Himachal Pradesh who are eager to take up the sport.
Aakasa, who has been skating since the age of four, faced a two-year gap due to the Covid-19 pandemic but returned with determination. Last year, she won two gold medals at the SGFI (School Games Federation of India) in Haryana and represented the state in the RSFI nationals held in Chennai. Now, as a proud Himachali, Aakasa will represent her home state in the upcoming nationals.
Her coach Chander Singhal expressed immense pride in her success, acknowledging the hard work and dedication she has put into the sport. “Aakasa’s journey is a testament to her unwavering commitment. She trains every morning from 4 am to 6 am and again in the evenings, preparing on an international-level bend track,” he said.

Aakasa’s parents, who have been her strongest supporters, shared their joy at her accomplishment. Her father Aashish Sharma is a vice-president at an MNC and her mother, Anupama Mahajan, a research scientist, is pursuing PhD.
Both expressed their pride in their daughter’s historic achievement. “This victory is not just for our family, but for the entire sports community of Himachal Pradesh,” they said.
